It’s possible that the Los Angeles Lakers are attempting to assemble a sort of dream team around their new head coach.
This week, Jovan Buha of The Athletic revealed on his YouTube channel that the Lakers may be interested in hiring Terry Stotts, the former head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, as an assistant. Buha mentioned that the Lakers had previously considered Stotts as a possible offensive coordinator and said they might give him another look in the future as they try to assemble a more seasoned team.
Stotts, 66, has worked as an NBA assistant for more than fifteen years, having served as an assistant for four different teams (including the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he shared the 2011 NBA title). In addition, he was head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks from 2005–07, the Trail Blazers from 2012–21, and the Atlanta Hawks from 2002–04. With nine postseason trips and one conference finals berth under his belt, Stotts has a 517-486 (.515) total head coaching record.
Granted, Stotts’ most recent NBA position did not quite go as planned; he served as an assistant for the Bucks during the previous year. But given that the Lakers may soon appoint a first-year head coach, Stotts’ background might be just what they need to round out their coaching staff.
