This offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have prioritized improving the offense and acquiring playmakers.
It’s a new era for the Steelers offense, whether it be through a full overhaul of the quarterback room with the signing of Russell Wilson and the trade for Justin Fields, or by choosing three offensive lineman to keep their quarterbacks upright in new coordinator Arthur Smith’s scheme.
Even though George Pickens is adept at spreading the field, the receiver corps still needs improvement.
Throughout the offseason, Deebo Samuel has been the focus of persistent trade speculations, and the Steelers might be the perfect fit for him.
Pittsburgh Steelers Pry 49ers Playmaker Deebo Samuel
Few playmakers are as captivating as 49ers standout Deebo Samuel if the Steelers are serious about bringing a dynamic presence to the receiving corps.
Samuel is on the list of the best receivers the Steelers should target, compiled by Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report.
“He hasn’t had even 900 receiving yards in a season since surpassing 1,400 receiving yards in 2021,” Davenport writes for B/R. Since Christian McCaffrey moved to the Bay Area, Samuel’s contribution as a runner has been greatly reduced.
“Samuel wasn’t really a conventional receiver in his prime. Even though he would strengthen the Steelers’ wide receiver group, he wouldn’t fit in well in Steel City.
Samuel might see a comeback if he were traded to the Steelers, where offensive coordinator Arthur Smith could use him as a runner, like the 49ers more regularly did until McCaffrey arrived, and as a potent deep threat opposite George Pickens.
The deal that Davenport suggests is as follows:
2025 Round 2 Pick and 2026 Round 4 Pick go to San Francisco.
Pittsburgh Acquires: Samuel, 2025 Draft Choice
Samuel has gained 4,122 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns through his first five seasons. He has also gained 1,007 yards and 19 more points through rushing.
Giving up a second-round pick could be a bitter pill for the Steelers, particularly if there are still unanswered concerns about Wilson’s and/or Fields’ long-term prospects in the Iron City.
Few players, though, have the ability to have Samuel’s kind of influence on a game or an offense, which might help the Bengals and Baltimore Ravens catch up to them in the AFC North.
