Zach Wilson may only play for the Broncos for one season as several media sites revealed on Tuesday that the team will not pick up his 2025 fifth-year option. Last week, the New York Jets traded a sixth-round pick to the Broncos in exchange for Wilson and a seventh-round draft pick. A percentage of his 2024 base compensation of slightly over $1 million will go to each team.

Then, on Friday, Denver chose Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick in the draft. Wilson would have received $22.4 million for his 2025 option. Wilson and Nix will battle for the starting spot alongside Ben DiNucci and Jarrett Stidham, who started just one game for Denver the previous season, according to Broncos coach Sean Payton.

Russell Wilson, the Broncos’ regular starting quarterback for the previous two seasons, was set to be released by the team in March, with an effective date of June 1. Following his arrival in Denver via a March 2022 deal with the Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson proved to be a major disappointment, going 11-19 as a starter in his two seasons there.

The Jets selected 24-year-old Zach Wilson, a BYU graduate, second overall in the 2021 draft. As New York’s starting quarterback, he completed 57 percent of his throws for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdown passes, and 25 interceptions, enough for a 12-21 record. He had a career-high 60.1 percent completion percentage, 2,271 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions in his 4–7 campaign last year.
