Callum McGregor, the captain of Celtic, started the Hoops’ Scottish Cup semi-final matchup against Aberdeen last Saturday, marking his first start since the end of February.
Although he was given the go-ahead at the base of midfield, the captain didn’t appear like him.
In the engine room, McGregor took Tomoki Iwata’s place. He wasn’t as animated as usual and didn’t really stick out.
Analyst Stephen McGinn believes that questions remain about his health. [Go Radio via RecordSport] “Callum McGregor’s fitness is still the one area of uncertainty,” he stated.
“I did question what role he would have to play, and I believe that last week’s start indicates he will return to full health before the season ends, but I didn’t think he looked like 100 percent last week.
He wasn’t quite as fluid, in my opinion. There were a few instances when you believed he might take the game by storm, but he refrained from doing so.
The 30-year-old is expected to start in Dundee again because he was selected and played last Saturday.
Although it is hard to imagine McGregor being benched, he wasn’t performing to his typical level against the Dons. His performances need to improve, but they will inevitably do so as long as his fitness keeps getting better.
In fact, Brendan Rodgers acknowledged that the captain is improving and becoming more adept in the gym at his news conference yesterday.
Ahead of a crucial stretch of six games that will determine the Celtics’ season, his return to full fitness is only encouraging.
