The Pittsburgh Steelers intend to extend the contracts of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

Actually, according to Pittsburgh Post Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac, the Steelers intend to keep Fields and Russell Wilson on staff for a number of seasons. The upcoming season will see both enter free agency, but Pittsburgh is hoping to avoid that.

In order to keep Justin Fields around, they will, in my opinion, grant him a contract extension of at least two years,” Dulac stated while appearing on the Steve Jones Show, a radio program hosted by central Pennsylvanian Steve Jones that focuses mostly on Penn State.

“They did not bring him in for a trial that lasted a year. And about Russell Wilson, the plan is for the Steelers and Russell Wilson to both extend him to a lengthier contract this season.”

Dulac had been expecting Wilson to sign an extension for a while, unless something happened on the field that made the Steelers switch to Fields. But this is the most confidently anyone in local or national media has spoken about a new contract for Fields.

Dulac stated, “I believe that both of these guys will receive some sort of deal.” “And with Justin Fields, I believe it may even occur before the season begins. Secure that contract extension to keep him committed and prevent him from leaving on a free agent’s own next season. That is undoubtedly the goal.

“That’s definitely the intention,” appears to be the key statement. It will be up to both players to demonstrate their worth in order to get new contracts that will probably bring in more money.

Adding Fields and Wilson came with a price tag, which was one benefit. The Steelers were able to use their remaining cap space elsewhere since they acquired value at quarterback.

The intention is for the Steelers to retain these two quarterbacks for a long time, but Dulac believes that before making any final judgments, they will need to see some results on the field because those cheap contracts are only worth as much as the product on the field.

“Both of those acquisitions, they’re not one-year rentals,” Dulac stated. “They’re planning on going forward with both of those guys unless the Russell Wilson would just bomb out and show that he has nothing left.”
