The Steelers will extend a hearty welcome to the player they select in the 2024 NFL Draft, as members of Steelers Nation and existing players will be the first to announce the pick.
Defensive tackle Cameron Heyward and tight end Pat Freiermuth have been chosen as special guests to reveal the team’s draft selections during the 2024 NFL Draft, which takes place in Detroit, Michigan, from April 25–27.
Heyward is slated to announce the Steelers first-round pick on Thursday, April 25, while Freiermuth will do the honors of announcing the team’s second-round pick on Friday, April 26.
Held in high regard is Freiermuth’s draft night experience, as he was selected in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft by late Hall of Famer Franco Harris.
He now has the opportunity to assist a potential Steelers player in the same way.
It has great significance. For me, it was exciting when Franco Harris revealed my selection after I was drafted,” Freiermuth remarked. “That was very unique. It was truly memorable to have a legendary former Steelers player greet me to the team. It’s great that I can now officially welcome one of my future teammates to the team.
Franco revealed the pick, and that’s when our relationship really took off. The reason you have such a special bond is that he told you when your dream came true. Whom I make known, I want to have a solid rapport.”
According to Freiermuth, draft night was tense for him; nevertheless, seeing Harris make that announcement made everything make sense.
“Definitely a stressful two days because I didn’t know if l was going to go on day one or day two,” Freiermuth said. “It’s a horrible wait. The worst thing in the world is having to wait for the call. You need to consider the bigger picture. It was nerve-racking and I was freaking out.
“However, waiting to hear my name called in the NFL Draft was a nice problem to have. And for Franco Harris to make the announcement
Juan Soto, a native of Morelia, Mexico, who was chosen as the Steelers International Fan of the Year earlier this year, will reveal the team’s first pick in the sixth round. In 2019, Soto’s enthusiasm for the Steelers was sparked when the local Steelers Fan Club started meeting at his restaurant. He has since joined the club, gone to games, and shared his passion for the game with others.
As part of the NFL’s Inspire Change social justice campaign, Travis Peters will reveal the Steelers’ second pick in the sixth round.
A special event will be held during Draft week by the NFL and S.H.I.E.L.D 1, a non-profit organization founded by NFL players with the goal of accelerating economic mobility in underserved communities.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the efforts made by Steelers fan and US Army veteran Travis Peters and his group Green Boots Urban Farm to improve the Detroit community’s access to wholesome foods and create a healing green space.
