The Springboks have made a number of interesting appointments to their coaching staff ahead of the 2024 Test season, Tony Brown being one of them.
The former All Black is sure to inject some new ideas into the attacking phase of the game, an area where the Springboks know they must improve to remain ahead of the competition.
In light of this, we select three Springboks who we believe would thrive under Brown’s aggressive style of coaching.
DAMIAN WILLEMSE, SPRINGBOKS’ NEW FIRST-CHOICE FULLBACK
Even though Willemse is playing some of the finest rugby of his career right now for the Stormers, he is still only 25 years old.
Willemse was supported as the Springboks’ new first-choice fullback during the most recent World Cup, surpassing Willie le Roux, and he is expected to play a significant role in the team going forward.
Though Willemse is already a very attack-oriented player, it’s exciting to see how much better he can get as Brown starts to work on a few key “extras” and plans set plays that can maximize the utility back’s danger.
VERSATILE CANAN MOODIE
Given that he has already won a World Cup in the first two years of his Test career, the 21-year-old has a chance to become one of the best Springboks of all time.
Though it’s unclear if the Springboks will pursue his transition to become an outside centre specialist, there’s no denying that he has the potential to follow in the footsteps of former Bok hero JP Pietersen and establish himself as an iconic figure on the wing.
Brown is the ideal coach to bring forth this innate talent because he has so much untapped potential.
‘CASH MAN’ MANIE LIBBOK
Brown is going to be rubbing his hands together, excited to collaborate with Libbok.
In 2023, Libbok made a stunning debut for the Springboks in the Test match. His running style, superb passing, and capacity to incite counterattacks gave the South African offense a new dimension.
Undoubtedly, though, there is still a lot of unrealized potential for even greater global dominance, and Brown—a prolific playmaker in his professional career—might hold the secret to advancing Libbok to new heights.
