Daniel Levy, according to John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose, executed a “masterclass” in securing Son Heung-min’s current Tottenham deal.
According to a story from The Telegraph earlier in the season on September 21, 2023, Son’s contract with Spurs would be extended by one year, keeping the 31-year-old with the team through 2026.
Levy will not have to worry about one of his key players’ contracts throughout the summer thanks to this decision, giving the Spurs chairman a much-needed respite following the Harry Kane scandal of the previous summer.
Nearly three years ago, Son signed a new four-year contract with the team (Sky Sports News, July 23, 2021). If not for the one-year extension that was included in his contract, fans would have been left wondering where their captain’s future lay.
Speaking about Son’s current conditions in North London, Wenham heaped compliments upon Levy’s bargaining strategies.
“They have the option to extend his deal, and that’s a no-brainer,” said Hamilton, the creator of the respected Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News. Son’s contract with Tottenham will remain in effect until 2026.
Son is likely to believe that he should receive a raise in salary, and he is correct to believe that, but this option to prolong implies that he is locked into the previous conditions.
From Tottenham’s and Levy’s perspective, this is their historical approach, and it’s quite cunning.
Because Tottenham maintained having these options to extend, Jan Vertonghen was essentially forced to stay on his current terms while other players his caliber received far higher salaries. For nearly the whole time he was at the club, he was paid £35,000 per week.
When it comes to negotiating these contracts, Levy frequently gives a masterclass in his craft.
