Celtic make approach to sign Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt

Dean Jones reports that Celtic and Rangers have enquired about attacker Joe Gelhardt’s possible signing with Leeds United.

Any deal for Gelhardt would be on a loan basis, the transfer insider disclosed via GIVEMESPORT on January 18.

Jones thinks the 21-year-old’s profile would work well in the Scottish game, as the top two Scottish Premiership teams are currently looking to sign him.

“I guess it’d be a loan move,” Jones clarified. Gelhardt looks ready to play on the appropriate platform, which makes him a nice profile player. Although he still needs some development, he already possesses amazing features.

“I’m not surprised that enquiries are being made on both fronts from Rangers or Celtic at this moment in time. For a player like Gelhardt, it’s probably confidence-boosting to have those conversations happening around you right now.

“Whether they can come to fruition and turn into a transfer is different, but I don’t think it’s harming anybody to look at that situation.”

Struggles

So far this season, Gelhardt has simply been unable to step up under Daniel Farke in the Championship.

In just two substitute appearances since August, he has played just six minutes in just six league outings.

Those at Elland Road, as well as Farke, will be disappointed that Gelhardt hasn’t been able to start playing regularly after his successful loan stint with Sunderland in the same tier last season, where he scored three goals and gave three assists in 18 appearances.

Since the forward requires more consistent playing time, a temporary transfer to one of Scotland’s top two teams could be advantageous for both the Whites and the forward.

Gelhardt, who is only 21 years old, still has plenty of time to develop into a top player, but in order to do so, he needs more consistent playing time, which he might find up north.

There is very little, if any, downside for Leeds United in this possible trade.
